Feast? What Feast? I’m famished!

Seems people aren’t just being condescending or cheeky when referring to “Feast of Love” as “that one where Radha Mitchell takes her clothes off” because, quite frankly, they’re the only two reasons – sorry, bit cheeky – to watch.

The idea is clever enough – we view a group of interconnected yankies as they struggle to get their loves on track, and, well, make sense of it all – but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Not only does Robert Benton’s film move about as fast as, well, about as fast as Robert Benton (!), but the punch has truly been left from the bowl. It’s got no kick.

Morgan Freeman is wasted as the film’s narrator and main thread; the man who has a personal connection to most of the film’s main characters. And though the always-dependable Greg Kinnear and the abovesaid Mitchell (“Rogue”) fare a little better in their parts, they still seem a little tired here – as far as Mitchell goes, she probably just realised half-way through filming that she’d been hired to strip, and little else.

It’s sad to see such great actors in such dull, uninvolving films.

A film of a similar structure, that did absolutely nothing at the box office but deserves to be seen, is ‘’Playing by Heart’’ (1998). Check that out instead… it’s probably half-way down a bargain bin somewhere at your local disc dealer.
