Adelaide Now has confirmed recent rumours that Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea : Captain Nemo" is looking to shoot in Australia, adding that South Australia itself is under consideration. They've also gotten wind that the studio's "John Carter of Mars" is checking out the area.
Usually films of such large-scale head to New South Wales ("Star Wars : Episode II", "Superman Returns") or Victoria ("Ghost Rider", "Knowing", the forthcoming "Green Lantern") because of the studio space and facilities on hand, but the South Australian capital has served as the backdrop for a few major flicks over the years - including the Val Kilmer vehicle "Red Planet" and more famously, "Mad Max : Beyond Thunderdome" - and does have some marvelous film-fit landscapes, so not surprising that the House of Mouse would consider SA (Coober Pedy in particular is a go-to spot for any filmmaker needing an alien planet).
Bruce Hendricks, Disney's president of physical production, scouted downunder locations for "Leagues", to be directed by McG, and also "John Carter of Mars", the weekend before last, says the website.
Interestingly enough, when Paramount had "John Carter of Mars" they took were looking at Adelaide as a possible lensing locale.
