Once on it's radar, death never pulls back and lets you slide on through, as the main characters in The Final Destination (the fourth in the popular death-keeps-coming series that kicked off with the Devon Sawa-Ali Larter starring Final Destination in 2000) discover.
This time, a teenager dodges a trip to the grave at a racetrack, only to find that death has a way of equaling the playing field after the fact.
CLINT MORRIS and ASHLEY HILLARD chat to young actors/victims Haley Webb and Nizk Zano about working on the highly anticipated [did I mention, 3-D?] sequel.
So what's it like being hacked and slashed to death?
Haley Webb : Awesome! It's so much fun! [Laughs]
Nick Zano : It feels weird to say it... but it was so cool to do those scenes! We'd go to work and pass each other in the hallway and say, "Hey I'm dying tomorrow!" and whomever you're talking to would say, "You're dying tomorrow - awesome!"
I've heard that some rather eerie occurrences have happened on the set of the first three "Final Destination" films. Did anything creepy happen to you guys while working on this one?
HW : Not on the set, but in real-life. I was just about to cross the street but before I did I decided I better check to see if anyone is running a red light....which they were! It's funny, as soon as I stepped out onto the street, I just had this feeling that I should look [to see whether anyone had ran a light] and I did. That feeling saved my life - so thank you Final Destination!
NZ : This isn't recent, but I almost drowned while surfing once. I was 13.
What happened?
NZ : Surfing with no leash, during a thunderstorm. I lost the board, and just got ripped out - I was taken, and drifted away from my friends. And it was raining, so you're just going further and further away. Luckily, a guy came out with a boogie board and got me back in.
Was it hard to film the sequence where you're buns gets stuck in the draining pool?
NZ : It was a very long... it was about a week preparation. I was working with the medic and the stunt guys. I think the longest I was under was about an hour-and-a-half. David [Ellis, the director] was directing from a speaker under water. I had an apparatus, but I had no mask - so I had to learn how to do this (shows an underwater breathing technique) but you had to exhale all the water that's coming in it. Not easy. David just had to get me not to take giant ‘panic breaths'.
Has the movie changed how you think about the paranormal - are you more interested in it now than you were?
HW : I've always been interested in it - but I don't know how much I believe. I don't know how I'd feel if someone came up to me though and said, ‘Just so you know you're going to be killed in three seconds' [Laughs]. I do believe in fate, and I do believe in things happening in ways that are not easily explainable and are out of our control, but only to an extent.
NZ : I'd have an easier time hearing that I'm going die from someone I didn't know rather than my buddy Greg whose kindly let me know I'm going to die today.
HW : I believe in things like intuitions and not having a good feeling about things, but as far as things like visions go - nah.
How do you think audiences will like the film?
HW : I think this one takes it to a whole new level. NZ : Because this one is in 3-D, it's almost like being part of something at the beginning. This is actually the first live-action make to feature HD 3D so it's kinda cool to be a part of the next big thing.
Why was the film shot in New Orleans as opposed to Los Angeles?
NZ : New Orleans gives big tax breaks. Michigan does too - but the only problem with shooting something like this there is that they don't have adequate crews. In New Orleans you can hire everyone you need locally. Yeah unfortunately Los Angeles aren't giving any tax breaks. I've worked the least in L.A, and the most everywhere else.
Are you guys anything like your characters?
HW : I guess I can be a little cold-hearted. When I was younger I was a bit of a goody two-shoes so the last thing I wanted to play was someone like that - but here I am [Laughs]. I'm probably more like [Nick's] character.
NZ : Yeah you probably are! [Laughs]
What are you guys working on next?
HW : I actually write in my down-time, and I've just written a romantic-comedy that I'd like to star opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman in. I know...it's very ambitious [Laughs].
NZ : I've got Cougar Town coming out next month - that's the new TV show starring Courteney Cox. I play [her] boyfriend.
How was it being Courteney's boyfriend?
NZ : It's been good fun! It's an odd day at work [Laughs]. [Courteney] is the nicest lady. She is also damn motivated - it's amazing how motivated she is! She just wants to do good, top-quality work... and succeeds.
Do you have a lot of bedroom scenes?
NZ : That's all we've done! [Laughs]
THE FINAL DESTINATION Commences Thursday
