Now that he and Leonard Nimoy are best buddies, “Star Trek” director J.J Abrams wants to pretty much use his new 'besty' in anything he does.
In addition to his much-welcome turn as Spock in the smash-hit sci-fi prequel, Abrams currently has Nimoy playing a role on his TV hit ''Fringe'', and today the prolific filmmaker/writer mentioned there’s the possibility that we might even see Nimoy in the next “Mission Impossible”.
I know.... crazy, right!?
Those my age – even a little older – will recall that Nimoy was part of the original cast of “Mission : Impossible”. Talking to Collider, Abrams mentioned how cool it’d be to have Nimoy come back to reprise his role as Paris - the Indomitable IMF agent that worked under Jim Phelps - for the new Tom Cruise-starring sequel.
‘’ How cool would that be?’’, says Abrams.
The filmmaker, who also directed “Mission : Impossible III”, said it’s also not out of the question that Peter Graves, who played Jim Phelps in the original series, could reprise his role for the big screen. (Despite the fact the character of Phelps has already appeared in a "Mission : Impossible" film - Jon Voight played the 'crooked' incarnation of the character in the 1996 original).
“I just got a call that Graves is in great shape, which would be a very bizarre bend in the space-time continuum, for obvious reasons. I almost feel like you could make him serious again and bring him back. Whether it’s Nimoy, who I have an incredible affinity for, or Graves, or anyone, we’ll see.”
And what about Roland Hand, the character played by Martin Landau on the small-screen “Mission : Impossible”?
“I actually tried to get Martin in Mission 3, in a very small little moment just for fun, and was told that he had no interest in doing it. But then, when I met him, after the movie came out, it was the greatest thing. We were at this restaurant in New York, for one of the TV Upfront parties, and someone introduced me to Landau. They took me over and Martin Landau came over to me, extended his hand, and [pretended to lift his face off]. That was the greatest thing I’d ever seen.’’
Meanwhile, Nimoy tells The Hollywood Reporter that he doubts J.J Abrams will have him come back as Spock for the next “Star Trek”.
"I think I was useful in this last film to help bridge between the original actors and this new cast," Nimoy said.
"They have a wonderful new cast in place... and I don't see why they would need me in this next film. But if they called me, I would be happy to have a conversation about it”.
