It’s doubtful that the events of ‘’2012’’ [the film] will come true – despite what our Mayan mates may say about it and/or Roland Emmerich, but one thing’s for sure, the film industry is sure as shit out of luck!
Judging by this bit of news, Hollywood’simminent wind down has seemingly already begun! My bro Brad at Bloody Disgusting tells me cash-strapped Dimension are set to do “The Amityville Horror” – again. Yep, the very same film they transferred to the silver screen only four years ago. Of course, they could be planning on utilizing the ‘Dollhouse’ to wipe all of our minds, thus we’d never remember the Ryan Reynolds/Melissa George effort, but – if only because they likely couldn’t cough up the cash to pay for such an exercise - that’s unlikely.
We shouldn’t be surprised, I guess - after all, Dimension are all about sequels and reboots at the moment – it’s the only way they envision getting out of the red (the shingle hasn’t been financially sound for a while now).
But the difference between say, “Scream 4”, “Spy Kids 4”, and the remakes of “Hellraiser” and “Children of the Corn” that they’ve got in the works, and this “The Amityville Horror” redo is that… well… there’s not really any potential there; nobody will be much interested in revisiting this story again so soon. People have had to wait a good decade to see Ghostface again, so one can understand a fourth “Scream” sparking interest with cinemaogers, but a well-worn tale that’s been done-to-death, not to mention very recently? Bob and Harvey would be better off using the money to pay off a debtor (say one of the smaller investors that shelled out for their ‘disappearing act’ “Halloween II”). It’s hysterically nonsensical.
According to Brad, a director may already be in talks to helm this latest umpteenth take on the “Amityville” legend. Andrew Douglas helmed the last version.
My gut tells me that what the Weinstein’s are planning is a “3D” version of “The Amityville Horror” – something schlocky and gimmicky. They are, after all, planning to make a lot of those other abovementioned franchise efforts with three-dimensional film stock – can only imagine they’d be planning the same for this. Still, don’t see anyone being much interested in it.
A sequel to the 2005 film, now that I can understand – especially given that it grossed $100 million – but a remake? Excuse me while I scratch my head..
