Breaking Dawn director update

As we reported back in August, the fourth (and likely final - unless there's some truth to those rumours suggesting the studio's looking at doing a "Volturi" spin-off) “Twilight” flick, “Breaking Dawn” is supposedly going to be split down the middle – and released as two separate films (Yes kids, just like “Back to the Future II” and “Back to the Future III”). But that plan, not surprisingly, has hit a speed-bump.

According to Variety, stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner only signed for four films, and by splitting "Dawn" into two, technically, they'd be doing five. Summit, the studio behind the cash-cow series, would have to dig really, really, really deep to entice them all back for the final film.

We’ve also mentioned several times that Chris Weitz, helmer of “New Moon”, is rumoured to be in talks to direct the film/s. The studio love him, the cast love him... the fans love him... so why wouldn't he be in the mix? And seems that proposal may have now reached the contract stage. Thing is, Summit are wanting to get going on "Breaking Dawn" soonish and unfortunately Weitz is tied up with his indy flick (also for Summit) "The Gardener". What to do? What to do? Dare say, Summit will - again - have to pull out their wallets and kindly ask Weitz to put his vampire-less indy flick on hold for a while.

You'll note David Slade, director of (the next "Twilight" film) "Eclipse", isn't even mentioned as being a consideration for "Dawn"- that's because the studio, let alone the cast, apparently don't have too many nice things to say about the "Hard Candy" helmer. Not sure exactly what the problem is there (maybe the Victoria switcheroo pissed the cast off?) but it's a pity, I'm thinking he's probably going to make the best of the "Twilight" films.
