Waters on Hairspray 2

Though it’s supposedly ”in the works”, not even John Waters can put a guestimate on when “Hairspray 2” might hit theatres.

Speaking to The Herald-Sun, the cult filmmaker says he hasn’t heard a peep out of the studio since he handed in his treatment for the sequel.

“They liked it. They paid me. That’s the last I’ve heard of it”, says the filmmaker, promoting the upcoming Oz-arm of his ‘Filthy World’ tour.

“They asked me to write the treatment but I’m so obsessive I wrote every single thing that could happen to every character. It’s different. You can’t tell the same Hairspray story again, it’s been told three times. This is what happens when the ‘60s really hit, when the teen stars suddenly aren’t stars any more. It’s crazy but in a PG insane John Waters way, like Hairspray was”.

As for those rumours that John Travolta won’t be back to reprise his role as Edna?

“Not that I know. He’s had that tragedy with his son. He’s probably right now talking about wearing a dress”, says Waters.

As for Waters’ long-gestating, “Fruitcake”, he’s still “Trying to make it”, he tells the newspaper, adding that it’s a “incredibly wonderful Christmas adventure. It’s like The Little Rascals with John Waters characters. It’s funny. It’s basically a children’s film. But it’s pretty dreary for independent film in American right now, especially moderate-priced independent film, there’s almost no such thing… it’s the worst it’s ever been, But I don’t give up”
