Last night, those with a BD-Live capable Blu-Ray Player (in other words, those who’ve installed their machine close to a telephone socket) and a copy of “Terminator Salvation”, had the opportunity to hear from director McG, who dropped by the read the Sermon at the death of the Terminator franchise, um, er, I mean, came by to provide a “live” commentary of the latest film in the money-spinning series.
Jason Chen was one chap interested enough to tune into the McG commentary – and let’s thank him! Sounds like he saved us a couple of hours.
Now, you’ll recall reading about Halycon, the company that owns the “Terminator” series, being in a spot of financial trouble. That’s all true – and yes, they’re having to sell the rights to the series to give themselves out of the red. And according to a company spokesperson, that deal should be complete by February.
And what will this mean for “Terminator 5”? Basically, it’ll mean the new buyer (who I’m predicting will be either Summit or Sony) has the right to do whatever the heck they want with the series. They can bring back Arnold (not that he’s probably up for being brought back), they can resurrect Rick Rossovich’s character from the original film and structure a story around him, they can tell a story set between the events of “T2” and “T3”, heck, they can even do ‘the Kate Brewster Story’… in short, it’s their decision.
And it’s also likely that the new owners will want to distance themselves from the mess that was “Terminator Salvation” - most would.
And as I mentioned a couple of days ago, I’ve already heard via peeps close to the Christian Bale camp that the boisterous Brit has no plans on returning as John Connor for this next film. But again, the new owners of the series will likely scrap everyone from ''Salvation'' and do something new… so Bale’s not even gonna have to pick up the phone.
Which makes McG’s comments on the “Salvation” commentary last night well… rather amusing.
According to the director, he’s still planning on directing the next two installments in the series – the next of which, he says he’ll somehow have Sarah Connor play a role (?); guessing that means he's still got a woody to do a time-travel 'Terminator' flick next time 'round – despite the fact Halycon won’t be involved anymore.
Um... don’t make much sense to me. The man doesn’t even know whether the new company even want him or not yet, and won’t until he hears from the new owner. And personally, I don’t think he’s going to get the call. If anyone’s going to be getting a buzz from the new head of Skynet, it’ll be Jim Cameron… no?
Still, a man's gotta have dreams..
