UPDATE! Seems Cameron's next film isn't Shane Salerno-penned "Doomsday Protocol" but a "3D" remake of 60s classic (and the inspiration for Joe Dante's "Innerspace") "Fantastic Voyage", also written by Salerno. MTV reports that Cameron is only producing, not directing.
Looks like James Cameron's going to be swimming in the science-fiction waters a little longer (granted, he only really departed from the optimistic forward-thinking planet of SyFy twice - for the contemporary action/comedy "True Lies", and more famously, period drama "Titanic") with word from Production Weekly that he's already knee-deep in another science-fiction yarn.
The site doesn't state what film Cameron is working on with writer Shane Salerno ("Aliens vs Predator : Requiem") and Twentieth Century Fox, but those who've stayed on top of Salerno's movements over the past year are likely correct in assuming it's "Doomsday Protocol", the science-fiction piece - about aliens and humans uniting to save Earth - that Fox snapped up back in September of 2008.
I've heard a fair bit about the "Protocol" script, and though it seemingly bares an eerie similarity to Cameron's latest, "Avatar", would seem to fit the filmmaker like a glove - lots of sci-fi, has an ‘epic' feel to it, and is embossed in emotion.... as most of Cameron's films (OK, maybe not "Piranha 2") are.
On the other hand, Salerno is said to be working on a couple of films at Fox, so this could be an entirely new project that ‘s sparked Cameron's interest.
Whatever it is, hopefully Cameron doesn't take the better part of a decade to get the film off the ground - especially considering some of the other promising projects he's attached to , like the long-gestating "Battle Angel ", the underwater thriller "The Dive", a remake of science-fiction classic "Forbidden Planet", and the oft-rumoured action/comedy that'll reunite the cast (Schwarzenegger, Arnold) of "True Lies".
