Golden Globe Nominations
by Clint Morris (Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 at 8:23 pm )

Sat up all night – as I usually do in this case – waiting for the Golden Globes to be announced. By the time the nominations had all been read out, my eyes weighed heavier than Tiger Woods’ black book, so much so that I couldn’t even fathom writing up a piece on it. Thus, I’ve left it for a few hours – well, 9 hours or so. Oops… So first up, what do I think of the noms? Well, gotta say, that Sandra Bullock one stinks to high heaven – and yeah, I’m not just talking about her nod for “The Proposal”. I personally didn’t think Bullock was that great in “The Blind Side”, if anything, she was simply channeling Kelly Lynch in “Curly Sue” or Tea Leoni in “Spanglish” (even more, what’s with everyone flocking to see the film? Jesus, it’s no better than one of those slipshod Hallmark telemovie efforts!). I think Sandra’s got the nod because, well, the voting members (including my producing partner Chris Showerman – who I’m certain wouldn’t have voted for the Speed freak… Chris!?) couldn’t think of anyone else to put in the ballot box there. Barbara Streisand didn’t work this year, Jodie Foster wasn’t in anything, Cate Blanchett’s been on hiatus, and Lillian Gish, er, dead - doesn’t leave them with many options (well, one – and I know I’m bias – Amy Adams for “Julia and Julia”. I think Amster was overlooked there, but a simple gaffe… what with Meryl Streep sharing the same frame as our red-headed Los Feliz bud). Rapt to see Kathryn Bigelow finally getting the credit she deserves (granted, I guess “Near Dark”, “Strange Days” and “Point Break” were never going to be nominated for anything other than sound design or make-up) with the brilliant “The Hurt Locker”. Hopefully the film will be re-issued in time for the Globes and the Oscars - where I’m fairly certain, it will be nominated for best film. Also, it’ll be lots of fun to see Bigelow take on her ex-beau James Cameron, who’s “Avatar” has been nominated for a couple of Golden Globes, and is also tipped to be humping the podium come Oscar time. Also wonderful to see the terrific “Up in the Air” (in particular, the best supporting actress nods for Vera Farmiga and Anna ‘I want a pay-rise now Twilight!’ Kendrick) get some nominations, wonderful to see another Quentin Tarantino film (“Inglourious Basterds”) up for ‘Best Picture’ – Oscar should follow suit; surprising but well-deserved nomination for Julia Roberts, up for best actress in the little-seen but lots-of-fun “Duplicity”; and all fingers are crossed for nominee Toni Collette and her brilliant turn in “The United States of Tara”.
