Lee for Swansea Jack

Veteran actor Christopher Lee looks set to star in a flick that'll undoubtedly give “Marley & Me” a run for its money in the weepie stakes.

The seemingly always busy actor (who has no less than four movies due out next year- including “The Wicker Tree” and “The Resident”) is in talks to star in a feature film based on real-life pooch, Swansea Jack.

Penned by Melanie Lloyd, the flick tells of the famous black retriever’s gallant rescue efforts in the 1930s.

Though not all his efforts were reported by the press (his most famous rescue, saving a swimmer from the docks, was all over the papers though, as well are a dozen-or-so other occurrences) it’s believed Jack saved more than 27 people from drowning in the docks and the local river in his time.

In 1936, Jack won the prestigious ‘Bravest Dog of the Year’ award, bestowed upon him by the London Star newspaper. Jack also received a silver cup from the Lord Mayor of London and he is still the only dog to have been awarded two bronze medals ('the canine V.C.') by the National Canine Defence League.

Jack became somewhat of a celebrity, attending special functions and being photographed with dignitaries.

In 1937, Jack accidentally swallowed rat poison and died. His death really affected the townspeople.

Producers hope to have the film in theaters sometime in 2011.

Thanks to 'Malcolm'
