A few months back, word hit the web that Leonardo DiCaprio was being touted to play Bond author Ian Fleming in a film based on Andrew Lycett’s book ''Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond''. As good as DiCaprio would likely be in the role, nobody seemed too keen on the idea – if only because the “Shutter Island” star doesn’t look much like the 007 author; he's also a different build to the rather cheesesticky Fleming.
Seems someone at the production company picked up on the unsavory comments (or, as is probably more the case, they couldn't snag Leo), because it’s James McAvoy (“Wanted”) who is now attached to the film, according to Pajiba. And if I do say so myself, he could totally pass for the famed author. We also know he can act (see “Atonement” or “The Last King of Scotland”, not necessarily “Wanted”) so that’s a win, too.
The pic, said to be budgeted in the $40 million range (quite substantial), will largely concentrate on Fleming’s years in the War. In WWII, he was commissioned first as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve lieutenant and subsequently promoted to Lieutenant Commander, then Commander.
The journalist and author may be best remembered for the James Bond series, but he also wrote the beloved children's story ‘’Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’’ and two non-fiction books.
There have been quite a few television biopics about Fleming – the most famous being “Spymaker” starring Jason ‘son of Sean’ Connery in the lead role – but this’d be the first feature film about the writer.
