Robin Williams vs Cop Out

Robin Williams and James Gandolfini were originally set to star in “Cop Out” (then known as “A Couple of Dicks”) prior to the film ending up at Warner Bros, and in the hands of Kevin Smith (where it ended up being a vehicle for Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan).

Williams claimed he had a pay-or-play deal to star in the film, then with Gold Circle (“White Noise 2”, “In the Name of the King : A Dungeon Siege Tale”), meaning even if they didn’t end up going through with the film, he’d still get paid – in this case, a sumly $6 million.

Unfortunately for the “Mork and Mindy” star, Gold Circle presented evidence suggesting a deal was “never finalized” between the company and the actor. As a result, Williams lost the case.

“It’s unfortunate that Robin Williams’ attorneys insisted on pursuing this lawsuit when it never should have been filed in the first place,” Gold Circle lawyer Michael Holtz, who handled the case with Lavely & Singer partner Marty Singer, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We always believed this case lacked merit, and the court obviously agreed. Based on the court’s ruling, we intend to seek recovery of Gold Circle’s costs and attorneys’ fees.”

Considering how well “Old Dogs” went it’s probably no surprise that Williams went chasing some cash.
