It was bound to happen sooner or later but “Avatar” was dethroned from the number one spot this week by “Dear John” grossing $30.5M. “Dear John” is going to be a very profitable film with a production budget of only $25M, the real test though will be next week when it goes against “Valentine’s Day”. “Avatar” eased to number two after seven weeks at the top. “Titanic” spent 15 weeks at number1 so although “Avatar” is beating records left and right, it didn’t beat that record. It grossed $22.9M this weekend bringing its total to $629.3M after two months of release.
“From Paris With Love” flopped this weekend with only $8.2M in week one. With a budget of $52M, this movie will be lucky to gross $25M before it flies onto DVD/Blu-Ray. “Edge of Darkness” plummeted in week two dropping a horrible 60.2% grossing $6.9M. With only $29M in the bank so far it will end up with a disappointing $40M. “The Tooth Fairy,” on a lighter note, continues to show its legs dropping only 33.7% with $6.6M this weekend. A total gross for the family film could reach $55-60M depending on how it holds next week against “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Lightning Thief”.
“When in Rome” dropped 55.1% this weekend, grossing $5.5M, expect this film to end with around $30M. “The Book of Eli” grossed $4.7M bringing its total to $82M, the $100M mark might be a challenge to hit if it continues to drop at this pace.
“Crazy Heart” finally hit the top ten after eight weeks in release. The Oscar nominated film grossed $3.6M in 819 theaters bringing its total to $11.1M. With a small budget of $7M, this movie will have a bright future as it hopes to take home some gold this Oscar season.
“Legion” dropped to $3.5M bringing its total to $34.7M;its final gross shouldn’t pass the $40M mark. “Sherlock Holmes” finally crossed the $200M mark bringing its gross to $201.5M after seven weeks, a total of $210M is likely.
Next week, a flood of new movies are released, starting with “The Wolf Man” finally after numerous delays, the ensemble film “Valentine’s Day” and “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Lightning Thief”.
