“Shutter Island” continued to rule the box office even with two new films released, grossing $22.7M. With $75.5M in the bank so far, a total of $125M from North America alone can be expected. Kevin Smith’s latest movie “Cop Out” opened to $18.2M, which was Smith’s highest opening for one of his films. This was also Smith’s first film he directed that he did not write. The $30M budgeted buddy cop flick could end up with $50-60M depending on its legs. “The Crazies,” a remake of George Romero’s 1973 original, was released this week to great results, grossing $16.1M. The film only cost $19M to make and looks to become a very profitable film.
“Avatar” became the first film to cross the $700M dollar mark in North America this week, grossing another $13.7M. Depending on what awards it wins this weekend, “Avatar” could pass the $750M mark total. “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” is showing its hold on the charts, dropping only 37.2% grossing $9.6M. With $71M grossed so far, the film looks as though it will finish with $100M. “Valentine’s Day” almost crossed the $100M mark this weekend, grossing $9.1M. Its total should land around $125M. “Dear John” continued its success dropping only 32.6%, grossing $4.8M. The $25M film should end up with around $90M total.
“The Wolfman” suffered the worst decline in the top ten dropping 56.9% and grossing a mere $4.3M.This film is disappearing fast and will be lucky to reach $70M by the end of its run. “The Tooth Fairy” dropped a slim 21.3% bringing its total to $53.8M. “Crazy Heart” barely dropped at all as it brought in another $3M. With “Crazy Heart” having a good shot ata Best Actor Oscar this weekend; this film might see a jolt next week.
Next week, Tim Burton’s remake of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Brooklyn’s Finest” is being released.
