“Weeds” star Demian Bichir (He’s Esteban Reyes on the hit Showtime series) and newcomer Jose Julian have snagged the lead roles in director Chris Weitz’ “The Gardener”, according to Deadline Hollywood Daily.

The flick tells of a father (Bichir) who is determined to give his teenage son (Julian) a better life. The illegal immigrant struggles to buy a used truck and gardening equipment to start a business. When the truck is stolen, father and son work together to recover it, reconnecting for the first time in years and slowly coming to terms with the painful reality of their situation.

“It’s about an undocumented immigrant who gets the chance to buy a truck and equipment to raise his family out of poverty, and how things go right and wrong from there” Weitz (“The Twilight Saga : New Moon”) tells the site. “It is an Italian neo-realist movie with a contemporary feel. I wanted to return to making films with no green screen required, not that there’s anything wrong with those.”

The site adds that Weitz, despite reports to the contrary, won’t be be back for “The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn”. Summit are apparently courting another high-end director to helm the final installment of the sparkly-vampire saga.
