Frak Yeah! Battlestar spin-off in the works!

I tell ya, it’s been a great day.

My best friend received the best news she could ever have received, I signed – literally on the dotted line – for a wee bit of a career change, My daughter ate all her sausages and vegetables, and SyFy just let slip that they might be developing a second “Battlestar Galactica” spin-off!

Since you’re likely uninterested in how I grilled the snags for my little girl, and couldn’t give a hoot about the news my friend Lisa received, I’ll tell you about SyFy’s “Galactica” spin-off – well, the little I know about it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network wants to bring back the Space Operatics that “Galactica” made it’s name for (yeah, less chatting on Caprica, more fighting above Caprica).

Though they won’t say what form it’ll take, where it’ll be set (guessing Space; guessing in a Spaceship), or whether any of the original cast will be involved (C’Mon! Please! Eddie Olmos would jump at the chance, surely!? Tahmoh Penikett needs a job now that “Dollhouse” has got the chop! And I’m pretty sure Richard Hatch would sell his mother to return to the world of “Galactica”), they will say there’s now plenty of room at the network (heh, funnily enough they didn’t sing to that tune a year or so back) for Ron Moore’s newly-discovered “BSG” Universe.

Despite the lagging ratings of prequel series “Caprica” (which I personally don’t mind – it seems to be finding it’s legs now. At the same time, I’ll agree, “Galactica” was a lot better a show – more exciting. But here’s hoping “Caprica” gets a bit more room to breathe before it’s chopped) the suits are confident the audience is still there for “BSG”.

“We’re looking for other ways to spin off ‘Battlestar’ beyond ‘Caprica,” Syfy executive vp development Mark Stern said. “That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with (executive producer) Ron Moore and his team. It would not necessarily be a traditional series.”

Hmmm.. what might be the new series be? A spin-off fixing on one of more of the surviving “Battlestar” characters? maybe a series set at the Academy? What about a show where Starbuck – the Angel, or whatever the frak she was – encompasses a different body each week to help someone through a tough time or biting predicament? or what about a show set on Earth? (Nah, we’ve seen that one and anyone that caught “Galactica 1980″ will attest to just how plain awful it was). Whatever it is, just let it be good. And just let it feature Vipers. And just let its music score encompass big-ass drum bangs!

I do wonder how having “Caprica” and this new “Battlestar Galactica” spin-off on the air will affect Bryan Singer’s plans for a “Battlestar Galactica” film – one, I’ll remind you, that won’t be related or share any link (besides character names) to past and present series. Can two different interpretations of the same material exist at the same time? I guess so, but it’s likely Singer will have a bit of a battle on his hands convincing the die-hard fans of Moore’s version to sign up with his fleet – if even temporarily. I’d think a much better idea would be to let Moore do the film – and set it in the same world as the enormously popular “Galactica” series’. It could still be ambitious, and it could still feature a name cast if need be, but it needs to have some kind of link to the “BSG” world we’ve been living in for the last five years or so.
