Remember that flick Bruce Willis shot last year? “Set Up”?
Yeah, the one we all scratched our heads over once we learned the film teamed the king of action cinema with… 50 Cent!
No bigs for 50, but this is quite a bombshell for Bruce… “Set Up” is headed straight to vid (as we’d say in the ’80s).
Lionsgate have announced that the Mike Gunther directed movie will hit DVD, Blu-ray, Digital Download and On Demand on September 20th.
Here’s what the studio tells us of the film :
A diamond heist turns deadly this September when Lionsgate debuts Set Up on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Digital Download and On Demand. Action veteran and Golden Globe® winner* Bruce Willis (the Die Hard series) leads an all-star cast including Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Blood Out), Ryan Phillippe (The Lincoln Lawyer) and former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture (The Expendables). An edge-of-your-seat action film, the DVD and Blu-ray Disc release also includes audio commentary with co-writer/director Mike Gunther (Beatdown), a “making of” featurette and a weapons featurette plus interviews with the cast and crew. Set Up explodes onto DVD and Blu-ray Disc on September 20th, for the suggested retail price of $19.98 and $24.99 respectively.
Former friends are pitted against one another after a diamond heist goes wrong. Betrayed, Sonny (Jackson) takes matters into his own hands when he partners with a notorious mob boss (Willis) to seek revenge against his former ally who took off with his loot. But when Sonny finally comes face to face with the man he’s been hunting, he’s forced to make a life-altering decision.
In an interview with BeforeTheTrailer.com, it was revealed that Gunther, a stuntman, had worked with Willis before when he wore that previous hat.
..instead of worrying about him getting hurt, you’re now trying to get him to be emotionally connected to what you need. But you’re talking about a guy that’s been around for years. He is a rock star. He shows up, he just does his thing. Really, to be honest, there ain’t much directing I’m doing. He’s like ‘Kid, don’t worry. I got it handled.’ He is a great guy. I mean a class act, and the opportunity to work with him was, I mean, beyond awesome. You know, so … [laughs] Yeah, I didn’t really direct him. I just said ‘Action’ and ‘Cut.’ But he brings so much to the table. You give him three lines and he brings it. He takes that character to a whole different level. So it was entertaining for me just to watch the monitor and watch him get off page and just do his thing and you’re like ‘Holy s###, you’re good,” so it was kinda a dream come true.
I’d love to know what’s happened here – is the film bad or maybe the marketing peeps are unsure how to market it or did the studio get final cut, ultimately destroying Gunther’s original version?
No idea. All we can go on at the moment are these new stills, and the DVD artwork, which have come our way :
