Palace Cinemas is having heir new festival ”Essential Independents: American Cinema, Now” and would love to offer Moviehole 10 double passes to giveaway to a special screening of “The Fits” on 19 May at Palace Comoin Melbrouen. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Anna Rose Holmer, who was listed as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2015.
As one of three winners of the 2014 Venice Biennale College, Anna Rose Holmer won a $187,000 grant to make “The Fits”, which premiered at Venice in 2015 to rave reviews. The film was recently selected to play in this year’s prestigious New Directors New Films which introduces emerging filmmakers from around the world and has uncovered talents such as Pedro Almodovar, Christopher Nolan and Spike Lee.

ABOUT ANNA ROSE HOLMER
Anna Rose Holmer was listed as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2015. Her narrative directorial debut, THE FITS (2015 Venice International Film Festival, 2016 Sundance Film Festival), is a selection of the Venice Biennale College 2014/2015 and the Sundance Institute Editing Intensive Fellowship.
She recently produced Jody Lee Lipes’s BALLET 422 (2014 Tribeca Film Festival, Magnolia Pictures) and Mike Plunkett’s SALERO (2015 IDFA, 2016 Full Frame). With filmmaker Matt Wolf, Anna co-directed and produced A BALLET IN SNEAKERS: JEROME ROBBINS AND OPUS JAZZ, a companion documentary to NY Export: Opus Jazz, (SXSW 2010 Emerging Visions Audience Award) which aired on the PBS Great Performances/Dance in America Series.
Anna’s first documentary feature, TWELVE WAYS TO SUNDAY, was one of ten films to participate in IFP’s 2009 Documentary Filmmaker Lab and premiered with Rooftop Films in 2010.
ABOUT THE FITS
Unhurried and fluid, this first feature from Anna Rose Holmer is an enigmatic coming of age story that follows an 11 year old tomboy Toni (played with great maturity by Royalty Hightower) as she looks for a place to belong amongst friends and community.
Set largely in a community centre located in the midst of a housing estate, Toni oscillates between the boxing gym and the dance class listening and observing – but something unusual is happening to those also in the building… an unexplained outbreak of fainting spells. But it’s the wide-eyed innocence of Toni and Hightowers’ portrayal that is the real story here.
“The Fits” seems untroubled (or unconstrained) by traditional filmmaking convention and while Toni’s story is great to watch, the fantastic freshness in the storytelling itself is always surprising and a pleasure to experience.
