WIN Die Hard 4.0 on DVD! Closed

As the hotly anticipated ''Die Hard 4.0'' hits DVD this summer, we look at some of the reasons why Die Hard’s John McClane is the ultimate action hero

John McClane often finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time – but when it comes to taking down bad guys, he’s the right man for the job.

He may be a hero, but John McClane’s no superhero -- just an ordinary blue collar stiff with a big heart and a ‘never say die’ attitude. No super powers, no ingenious gadgets, no flashy cars, no martial arts skills, no bulging biceps -- nothing but two fists, his service weapon, and his wits.

John McClane is seriously flawed: he drinks to excess, smokes too much, swears too much, and has no respect for authority, especially when it’s throwing its weight around.

Unlike, say, James Bond or Indiana Jones, John McClane is a one woman guy -- even though his marriage is rocky, to say the least.

His down-to-earth, cut-the-crap attitude gives him a simple, no-nonsense approach to problems. In a world mired in red tape and bureaucracy, John McClane cuts straight to the chase and gets the job done.

A true hero doesn’t go looking for trouble. But when trouble finds John McClane – as it often does – he’s always prepared. And no wonder – he’s been through hell, lived to tell the tale, and learned from the experience.

Call it a defence mechanism, a way to stay sane in the face of overwhelming odds… Or maybe John McClane just has a great sense of humor. Whatever the reason, McClane has the best wise cracks in the business, even when no one else is listening.

He’s brave, but still vulnerable – the ultimate underdog. Could you imagine any of John McClane’s contemporaries – from John Rambo to James Bond and Jason Bourne – saying to himself “Dear God, don’t let me die” as he’s about to go mano a mano with men carrying machine guns?

He’s not indestructible – when he gets shot, cut, grazed, punched, beaten, it hurts. That makes John McClane feel real – because when he hurts, we hurt.

And finally… for all his faults, flaws and vulnerabilities, John McClane always comes out on top. For that reason alone, he will always be the ultimate action hero.
