Date : March 19, 2008     Writer : Clint Morris

Welcome to another compilation tape of some of my newest hits…. There’s something in here for everyone.

Resurrecting the Champ

Region : 1
Who's in it? : Samuel L.Jackson (or is it Mike Tyson?), Josh Hartnett, Kathryn ‘Needs a Hair Cut’ Morris, Alan Alda.
What is it? : A pic based on the true-story of a struggling reporter (Hartnett) who scores a one-on-one interview with, who he believes, to be a former boxing great. Later, when it’s revealed that the man he’s been interviewing isn’t who he says he is, the young writer’s career crumbles. Though an entertaining movie, and Hartnett and Jackson are both great in it, it’s a bit dog-earned around the corners - There’s numerous errors in it, and I’m guessing it’s only about 60% true. You’d think you’d have to turn your brain on to watch something like this – something I expected to be along the lines of “Shattered Glass” – but sadly, you’re better served by turning it off for this one.
Extras : Include a featurette and cast/crew interviews.

In the Name of the King : A Dungeon Siege Tale

Region : 1
Who’s in it? : Everybody who answers to cash – Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Claire Forlani, Ron Perlman, Burt Reynolds, Leelee Sobieski and John Rhys-Davies.
What is it? : What is it, you ask? Well, it’s quite possibly Uwe Boll’s best film to date. I know, that doesn’t mean a lot since all his films have been about as exciting as pleasuring your own behind with a garden hose, but this one actually seems to have a story but more so, some good production design and a group of fine actors. Jason Statham plays a simple family man who is forced to take up arms after an evil sorcerer unleashes an army of bloodthirsty beasts that destroy his small village and capture his beautiful wife.
It’s still only an “average” movie, and one I wouldn’t recommend anyone rush out to see, but considering Boll’s previous films were almost unwatchable, that’s saying something.
Extras : A featurette, deleted/extended scenes.

Dirty Dancing : 20th Anniversary Edition

Region : 4
Who’s in it? : Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey
What is it? : With Patrick Swayze back in the news, there’s bound to be renewed interest in what most consider his best film.
“Dirty Dancing”, which never expected to do anything more than to possibly break even, was a surprise hit when it was released in 1987. I remember the time well – I was working at a Drive-In theatre, and on a whim, the distributor offered “this new movie, Dirty… something” to the Drive-In before the local cinema chain. That was almost unheard of – usually the cinema would get the film first-run, then, a few months later (yes, months!) the Drive-In would be able to run it. No doubt the sales agent for the distributor realized their gaffe a few weeks later when “Dirty Dancing” skyrocketed to the top of the box-office charts and helped keep the Drive-In a few years longer. A good movie. If you haven’t seen it for a while… check it out again.
Extras : A bunch of stuff on here, including commentaries, deleted scenes, screen tests, music videos and outtakes. Sadly footage of Jennifer Grey buying her new nose hasn’t been included.

Tootsie : Deluxe Edition

Region : 4
Who’s in it? : Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dave Grusin, Sydney Pollack, Bill Murray and a then-unknown Geena Davis
What is it? : I don’t even like ABBA, nor am I a big fan of Jamie Bamber, and yet I love “Tootsie” – what does this make me? Hopefully, just someone who can pick a good movie from a bad one. A precursor to “Mrs Doubtfire”, the film featured Dustin Hoffman as an actor who decides to dress up as a woman to see if he can’t get a job – he does, on the top-rating soap. Unfortunately, he gets as hard as a rock whenever he’s around his co-star (pretty Jessica Lange).
Extras : Hoffman’s screen-test, an hour long documentary on the film, and a bunch of deleted scenes. If it’d encompassed a commentary from Hoffman, I might’ve said ‘Buy it Today!’.

Enchanted

Region : 1
Who’s in it? : Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Susan Sarandon
What is it? : The terrific Amy Adams (A recent Oscar Nominee for her work in ‘’Junebug’’; she also appeared in ‘’Talladega Nights : The Ballad of Ricky Bobby’’, ‘’Charlie Wilson’s Wa’’ and ‘’The Ex’’) and everyone’s favourite TV doctor, Patrick Dempsey (‘’Grey’s Anatomy’’), take the form of a fairytale princess and her unlikely prince in the smash hit Disney treat, ‘’Enchanted’’.
A film for the whole family, the comedy/romance/adventure/musical (it’s got it all!) fixes on a cartoon princess who is transported to modern-day New York where she not only has to deal with being a ‘human’ – hilarity ensues! – but protect her new city from the evil witch (Susan Sarandon) that has followed her. Dempsey plays a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer who has come to her aid. I can’t recommend this one any more….. It’s a joy from start to end!
Extras : Featurettes, deleted scenes…. But mostly stuff for kids.

Blonde and Blonder

Region : 4
Who’s in it? :Pamela Anderson, Denise Richards
What is it? Not afraid to play up to their real-life personas, Pamela Anderson and Denise Richards team for a film that will have you instantly forgetting that both women – for real! – actually have high IQ’s in real life.
Dee Twiddle (Pamela Anderson) and Dawn St. Dom (Denise Richards) are two friends who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time when they witness a mob-style execution. To make matters even worse, two mafia men are convinced the two blonde bombshell’s are world-best female assassins.
If you loved the antics of the ‘’Legally Blonde’’ films, you’ll fuckin’ hate this piece of shit – it ain’t half as witty or well-thought.
Extras : None. Not that I’d have watched them if there were any.

Skin Walkers

Region : 4
Who’s in it? : Jason Behr, Sarah Carter, Rhona Mitra
What is it? : I saw a preview of this film at Comic Con and ever since I’ve been determined…. Not to see it. Funny how I’m now reviewing it.
The werewolf movie gets a lazy friggin’ makeover with the Stan Winston produced werewolf pic, “Skin Walkers’’.
Directed by Jim Isaacs (‘’Jason X’’), the no-thrills monster movie tells of a distraught mother (Rhona Mitra) who learns her soon howls at the moon!
Timmy’s (Matthew Knight) health rapidly begins to take a turn for the worst and his
concerned mother Rachel (Rhona Mitra) hasn’t a clue what’s wrong. Enter a group of specially appointed guardians who have been watching over Timmy since birth – they know the truth about the events that are beginning to unfold, and are determined to protect the boy. Seems Timmy is part were-wolf and his life’s being threatened by a few lycanthropes that aren’t fond of mix-breeds. Booooooooooring!
Extras : The preview disc contained no bonuses.

Daddy Day Camp

Region : 4
Who’s in it? : Cuba Gooding Jr
What is it? : Reprising the role that Eddie Murphy played in the 2004 comedy, Cuba ‘I fucked myself over’ Gooding Jr (you need a new manager - - -and quick, dude!) is Charlie, the co-owner of a popular kiddies crèche, who decides to expand his business one step further and open a ramshackle Summer camp he attended as a kid. Charlie soon faces foreclosure, low enrolment, and plenty of repairs – not to mention a handful of kids who are intent on making Charlie’s first experience playing camp counsellor a living hell!
I’m surprised this dog even got a theatrical release – but then, I’m constantly amazed at what people will actually pay to see at the cinema.
Extras : I didn’t want to torture myself anymore by even looking….

Atonement

Region : 1
Who’s in it? : Keira Knightley, James McAvoy
What is it? : Great movie, but a little long-winded on DVD, “Atonement” , based on Ian McEwan's best-selling novel of love thwarted, tells of a mischievous girl who accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit, only to find that her words have irrevocably and permanently changed the lives of all involved.
The young woman continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love
As good as Knightley and McAvoy are in the movie, she doesn’t seem to be in it that much (someone gets a timer out will they?) but more so, the young girlie Saoirse Ronan, gives a much more memorable performance than both heavyweights.
Extras : Commentary with Director Joe Wright, deleted scenes with commentary by Director Joe Wright, a Making of Atonement featurette, and a Novel to the Screen featurette

The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show – The Complete Series

Region : 1
Who’s in it? : Um, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm?
What is it? : “The Flintstones” was a great show – very funny at times, terrific voice actors, and quite inspired for a show of it’s type. “The Pebbles and Bam-Bam Show” isn’t half the show its predecessor is, but fans of the prehistoric comedy will no doubt be glad to see it arrive on disc.
The show had Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, as well as their friends Wiggy, Penny, and Moonrock, getting up to all sorts of trouble each-and-every-week – or for the 16 weeks it aired anyway.
Anyone think that Bamm-Bamm probably ended up beating poor Pebbles? Seems to be the type.
Extras : Four bonus episodes.
