Avid viewers of ''Family Guy'' know the show’s writers love their often-absurd pop-culture references. So it makes sense that these satirical scribes should lampoon the biggest pop culture phenomenon of all time – Star Wars.
Recreating all the key scenes in ''Star Wars – Episode IV: A New Hope'', ''Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest'' puts all the ''Family Guy'' regulars in the place of George Lucas’ iconic characters: Peter as Han Solo, Chris as Luke Skywalker, Stewie as a diminutive Darth Vader, and the creepy old paedophile guy as Obi Wan Kenobi.
While ''Blue Harvest'' was clearly created from a position of deep affection, it shows neither reverence nor restraint. From the opening word-scroll that ponders what might have happened had an unknowing Luke and Princess Leia consummated their attraction, to its gleeful mockery of plot holes and Lucas’ dumb dialogue, Blue Harvest somehow pays respectful homage to Star Wars while trampling all over it.
Running a full 60 minutes, ''Blue Harvest'' is packed full of the in-jokes, cameos, references, asides and sharp dialogue (“Well stay here and rot, you stuck-up bitch”) that has seen the regular series become such a phenomenon. In fact, while it’s a standalone project, ''Blue Harvest'' is also one of the best ''Family Guy'' episodes ever made. ''Star Wars'' and ''Family Guy'' aficionados should both make a beeline for it.
The DVD is available in two versions: a bare-bones offering with nothing but the main feature, or a $60 special edition packed with loads of stuff including an interview with George Lucas (conducted by none other than Seth MacFarlane), a 3D version of the famous tie-fighter battle scene (3D glasses included), a making-of, an Easter egg, a commentary and a whole heap of paraphernalia.
