WARNING: This is a kid’s movie. If you’re over the age of eight, you probably won’t find this movie to be spellbinding and amazing. Luckily, I’m seven and three quarters so I loved it. Talking dogs, goofy bad guys, squeaky clean good guys, an endless supply of bad puns and fart jokes, and a whole lot of lickin.
The story of ''Snow Buddies'' begins with five golden retriever sibling puppies – Buddha, Mudbud, Rosebud, Budderball, and B-Dawg. They managed to get whisked away in an ice cream air-drop shipment to a small town in Alaska. Meanwhile in a small town in Alaska, a husky puppy named Shasta and his boy owner, Adam (Dominic Scott Kay) have been dreaming about entering the sled dog competition if only they had five other dogs to complete their sled dog team. Just about then, five golden retrievers conveniently drop out of the sky – and I’m going to make you figure out the rest of the story.
The puppies are adorable. Dominic Scott Kay is adorable. The story, although incomprehensibly unbelievable, is adorable. It’s just a darn cute movie.
The DVD is loaded with extra features including a Blooper reel staring the pups with their animated mouths, which I must admit takes away from the spontaneity of the bloopers if they have to be animated. None the less, kids will love them. There is also a commentary track with the voices of the pups (aka: Buddies). The Dogumentary is a quick featurette showing the behind the scenes hijinks that invariably go along with working with animals. Finally, my favorite, the Magic of Digital Effects, narrated by director Robert Vince, shows how they took a small cold town in Canada and made it look even smaller and colder.
If your young pups love young pups (and honestly, who doesn’t?) then ''Snow Buddies'' will be a doggone winter wonderland for them. Just make sure they’re eating the popcorn and not the yellow snow.
