It's pretty hard to judge from his performance in the teenage comedy “Blind Dating” whether or not newcomer Chris Pine is 'Captain Kirk' material but one thing it does do is prove to us that the good-looking and rather likable young artiste can carry a movie – and from the sounds of it, that's exactly what the upcoming “Star Trek” prequel, featuring Pine as the young Enterprise captain, requires.
Directed by James 'Mr. Jane Seymour' Keach, “Dating” is an enjoyable-enough comedy about Danny (Pine, who you may also remember – though probably not – as the male lead in the Lindsay Lohan starrer “Just My Luck”), a young blind man in search of a woman that'll truly love him for who he is – not pity him for his disability or forget he's not a piece of meat (referring mainly to his sex therapist, played by a newborn Jane Seymour, who can't seem to keep her clothes on around Danny). Meantime, he's meeting a couple of surgeons who might possibly be able to repair his vision - - - by way of some dodgy experimental surgery.
Comedy? Romance? Drama? Science-Fiction? Showreel for Pine? Hard to say what was the intention here, one thing's for sure it's a bit of a mess – a good mess, but still a mess. Its as if the script was being written and re-written mid-production with some moments and subplots seemingly tacked on at the last minute. Not all the elements seem to gel. Though it wasn't a masterpiece, the drama “At First Sight”, starring Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino, traveled similar territory only more successfully. Maybe check that out instead.... unless, of course, you're that keen to see what the next Captain Kirk will look like?
Extras include behind-the-scenes footage, bloopers and deleted scenes.
