Jackass 2.5 (DVD)

Johnny Knoxville, Steve O, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, Wee Man

An embarrassing and shameless cash-in is all I can say here. Well, that’s not all I can (or will) say, but the cash register is clearly ringing in the background of this entire DVD – previously they were giving this ‘film’ away for free!

At Jackass.com you can view this entire movie. Or at least you can if you have the time, the inclination and the means at your disposal. You have to download a particular viewer first, sign up a couple of times, return to the site and then you can’t even watch the whole film as you would on DVD – no pausing, no rewinding. And unfortunately, no fast forwarding.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like (dare I say love?) the ''Jackass'' franchise. I’ve laughed as hard as the next man at these hopeless idiots doing the stupidest things imaginable to themselves and each other. The first film had me literally crying in the cinema, I tell no lie. I had hoped this ‘film’ would be no different. I also hoped this was an extended edition of ''Jackass Number Two'', which was the first disappointment. However, there were many more to follow. The laughs I got were sporadic at best, while my indifference remained fairly constant. At what point is something allowed to be called a movie anyway? 64 minutes of deleted scenes from Jackass 2 does not a film make. And then you get extra scenes that run for over 90 minutes! Erm, hello? Anyone notice something out of shape here?

While there are a couple of inspired moments, the majority of this is a shameless money-grubbing exercise, milking the one market that has too much money and nothing to spend it on. It doesn’t seem like something the Jackass characters would allow, what with their anti-establishment stance, but it seems the allure of easy money far outweighs whatever minute morals these guys actually have.

I’m not saying this is worthless – it’s easier to buy this on DVD than to stand in the queues at the website waiting impatiently to see what turns out to be very average fare. It’s a tricky call, and therefore must be left entirely to the diehards, for they’re the only ones who’ll really get anything worthwhile out of this.

Weak, dudes. Weak.

‘The Making of Jackass 2.5’ is barely discernable from the rest of the ‘film’, while ‘The Making of Jackass the Game’ is nothing but a sales pitch to teenage boys. A photo gallery and the 90+ minutes of deleted scenes pad out the rest. There is a three minute Easter egg in there too, which is the entire cast shaving themselves for the final skit of ''Jackass 2''. Again, weak.
